GOOD MORNING CHOP FAMILY!

How’s the week treating you?

We’ve got news that really highlights how much the rest of the world is betting on the continent’s future right now.

From massive investment spikes in East Africa to Japan backing West African supply chains, the "smart money" is moving fast. We’ve even got a little American football making its way to the coast of Ghana.

Let’s get into the chop.

The Space Race Reaches for the Moon

If you looked at the sky today, you might have seen a bit of history in the making. Four astronauts are currently orbiting Earth after a successful launch to the moon - the first in over 50 years!

The new space race is in full effect, and the real reason (if you ask me) is that China has its own moon plans and the U.S. feels like it's already behind (spoiler: it is).

BUSINESS

The $13 Billion Surge and the Tokyo Connection

It has been a massive week for big-ticket business moves, and Ethiopia is leading the pack. They’ve just secured a staggering $13 billion in investment pledges, a wild jump from the $1.6 billion they saw just a year ago.

Most of this capital is eyeing manufacturing and services, which shows that the move to becoming a regional industrial hub is actually working. Addis is definitely a city to watch right now.

Over in West Africa, the Development Bank (BOAD) just secured $230 million from Japan’s SMBC. This dough will be used for food and energy supplies across the UEMOA region.

Have you ever heard the expression: “Money doesn’t lead, it follows”?

In a nutshell, this means that money or investors should not and typically do not lead in solving problems. Smart money follows those with passion and a strategy for making things happen to fill gaps and meet community needs.

Nigerian NFL Champions

Flag Football Hits the Coast

Who says business is all about spreadsheets? Sometimes it’s about a 40-yard dash, long bomb, and touchdown dance.

The NFL is currently on ground in Ghana, running Flag Football clinics, looking to tap into the massive athletic talent pool in West Africa.

I mean, West Africa has some crazy athletic talent, and the NFL, NBA, and others are now planting seeds so they can later pluck the future stars.

Did you know? As of early 2025, there are over 140 players with direct African lineage or heritage on NFL rosters, with Nigeria leading the continent in representation.

TECH

Starlink might be getting the headlines, but the real story is the local infrastructure catching up.

Several West African nations are fast-tracking regulatory approvals for low-earth orbit (LEO) satellite providers this month.

It’s not about whether you can get a signal in the bush; it’s about how fast that signal is.

The race between legacy telcos and satellite disruptors is likely to drive down data costs for SMEs across the region by the end of the year.

This makes me happy, because I love to WFV (work from village).

  • Rural E-Commerce: Logistics startups in Kenya are reporting a 20% jump in "last-mile" deliveries outside the major cities.

🌍 What Else is Cooking? 🍳

  • The AI Wage Shift: Major tech firms are moving more high-level AI training tasks to hubs in Lagos and Nairobi as the global talent war heats up.

  • Oil Prices: Global Brent crude took a 3% dip today, which is a bit of a breather for the fuel pumps, even if it’s a mixed bag for the big exporters.

  • Europe’s Holding Pattern: The ECB is keeping interest rates steady for now, giving frontier markets some much-needed breathing room on their debts.

Dish of the Day 🥘

Red Red

A Ghanaian staple that never misses. It’s a hearty bean stew cooked in zesty palm oil and served with those perfect fried plantains. And that’s exactly how I ate mine.

This dish slaps hard, and I took an extra order for carry out - Delish!
