Global attention remains locked on the Middle East, and the ripple effects are creating a bit of a "catch-22" for African central banks. In South Africa, inflation expectations have actually dipped to a record low of 3.6%, which would normally signal it’s time to cut interest rates and give the economy some breathing room.
However, the ongoing war is casting a long shadow. Because the conflict keeps oil prices volatile and weakens local currencies like the Rand, the South African Reserve Bank is hesitating to pull the trigger on those cuts.

Egypt’s 5.6 GW Clean Power Push
Egypt is cementing its status as a regional energy titan. The government just signed a massive series of agreements to develop 5.6 gigawatts (GW) of renewable energy capacity—a mix of solar and wind—all integrated with large-scale battery storage.
Now this is not about being green and all climate-friendly, but by using batteries to store excess power and dispatch it during peak summer demand, Egypt is building a blueprint for how to run a modern, industrialized economy on sun and wind. Read about the 5.6 GW mega-deal
Marriott Lands in Cape Verde

Cape Verde, those slow and sexy islands off the western coast of Africa, just got a major luxury boost.
Marriott International has officially made its debut in the archipelago with the opening of the Four Points by Sheraton São Vicente Resort. Located on the vibrant island of São Vicente—known as the cultural heart of the country—this move signals a growing confidence in Cape Verde as a top-tier destination for international business and high-end tourism.
Have you been to Cape Verde? Let us know what you think about it. I for sure will be checking out this new resort, because I like fancy!

The $272 Million Rebound
After a quiet start to the year, African startup funding came roaring back in February and March. Funding rose by 56% to hit $272 million, driven by a few "heavy-hitter" deals.
Interestingly, nearly half of this was raised as debt rather than equity, showing that mature startups are looking for ways to grow without giving up more ownership. Benin-based electric vehicle firm Spiro and Egypt’s Breadfast led the pack, proving that logistics and consumer tech are still the safest bets for big capital. Check out the funding surge
The "Hardware" Pivot
But… there does seem to be a trend to move away from fintech. Investor sentiment for 2026 is showing a clear trend: the "fintech fatigue" is real, and "deep-tech" is the new darling.
Venture capital is flowing heavily into physical infrastructure, specifically logistics and cold-chain storage.
In the last 72 hours, reports show that logistics startups have captured nearly 30% of new seed funding, as investors look for "real-world" solutions to the continent's supply chain bottlenecks.

Nigeria’s AI Virtual Assistant
The Nigerian government has launched CLHEEAN, an AI-powered app designed to bridge the gap between citizens and public institutions. The platform acts as a virtual assistant, supporting multiple local languages via voice recognition.
Citizens can ask about policies, report concerns, or submit feedback directly through the app. It’s a bold experiment in using AI to improve civic engagement and government transparency in a way that feels accessible to everyone.
I am curious if CLHEEAN will accept bribes, too? Just kidding 😀

Pastel de Atum
Since we were in Cape Verde checking out the new Marriott site, we decided to try some local fare. We were told to try Pastel de Atum. This is a lovely pastry filled with spicy tuna and deep-fried. I devoured several and took more to go.
