The High Cost of Small Talk

The Africa Media Convention is kicking off in Lusaka this week (May 4-5), and while "press freedom" sounds like a lofty seminar topic, the real story is media sustainability.

In a world where every influencer with a smartphone is a "journalist," African newsrooms are scrambling to prove they’re worth the subscription fee.

This hits home for us, too. We fall in this boat. The Daily Chop is trying to make waves in the murky African media waters, and it is definitely challenging.

The whole subscription model is a non-starter for us. We want to keep our stuff free and accessible. But is that sustainable? Well, if you guys keep reading and supporting, it will help!

Who better to tell our stories than us?

Anyway, we will keep writing and bringing stories that are important and interesting.

Let us know if you want us to bring something else to the table.

African Proverb of the Day

"If you carry the egg basket, do not dance." > (Origin: Ambede, Central Africa)

MARKET MOVES

BUSINESS

The "Self-Determination" Era

African business leaders just wrapped up a major forum in Paris, and there was a common thread and message: no more small boy moves, only power plays.

Africa needs to embrace its power and position in global trade.

The theme was "Smarter Growth," but the subtext was "Self-Determination." Instead of waiting for foreign aid to trickle down, entrepreneurs are leaning into local fintech and AI to rewrite the rules of engagement themselves.

We hope it’s not just talk and smoke but real heat.

The $221 Billion Bridge

The African Development Bank is heading to Brazzaville later this month with a sobering number: $221 billion.

That’s the minimum price tag for the continent’s infrastructure needs. The theme for their 2026 meeting is "Mobilising Financing in a Fragmented World."

TL;DR: Since global development aid is dropping like a stone, Africa is looking to its own natural resources and domestic banks to build the roads and grids of tomorrow.

This is obviously easier said than done. It will take a concerted effort and big collaborations, strategic planning, and partnerships.

FINANCE & MARKETS

The Billion-Dollar Handshake in Nairobi

The Rockefeller Foundation just marked 60 years in Nairobi by doubling down on "Mission 300"—an ambitious project with the World Bank to connect 300 million Africans to electricity.

They’re moving away from traditional philanthropy toward "AI-enabled, data-driven market platforms." It turns out the best way to help a market is to actually power the market.

TECH

Cloud or Bust

A new SAP Africa report shows that African SMEs are being proactive about cloud computing.

Nearly 61% of businesses are now moving their entire operations to the cloud.

This is because the cost of managing physical servers in a market with fluctuating power is becoming mad difficult.

Not to mention, it provides a better piece of mind, knowing your data is safe without the worries of local power issues and instability.

It would be amazing if there were African conglomerates that owned their own secure cloud infrastructure.

AI’s "Oops" Moment in SA

Speaking of difficulties, South Africa just had to withdraw its entire national AI policy.

They made a boo boo. Because the draft policy apparently included AI-generated citations and hallucinations.

The funny thing is that a policy meant to regulate AI was undermined by the very tech it was trying to manage.

Who let the office boy use ChatGPT to run the script? 🤣

Quick Bites

  • The Data Center Boom: Nigeria’s data center capacity is set to balloon to 400MW—nearly 7% of the country’s entire grid. High-speed internet needs high-speed power. But, and it’s a big but, can Nigeria sustain this? Half the population doesn’t even have proper power. Should the focus be on data centers or citizens?

  • Parisian Pivot: African startups at the Business Africa Forum are focusing on AI adoption that actually solves local problems, not just mimicking Silicon Valley trends.

  • The Hijack Shift: A hijacked oil tanker off the coast of Yemen was recently spotted heading toward Somalia. Shipping is becoming the new global battleground again.

🌍 What Else is Cooking? 🍳

  • The 5-Day Workweek is Turning 100: Happy birthday to the weekend! It’s been exactly a century since the 40-hour workweek became the standard. Now, experts are arguing that AI should be our "gift" to finally move to a 4-day work week. We’re still waiting for the AI to volunteer to do our laundry, though.

  • Musk vs. Altman: Round 5,802: Elon Musk and Sam Altman are heading back to court. It’s the world's most expensive "he said, she said," and honestly, at this point, they should just settle it with a game of Rock Paper Scissors or better yet, a celebrity boxing match!

  • The Blue Antelope’s Comeback: Scientists are trying to use "de-extinction" tech to bring back the Blue Antelope. Apparently, in 2026, we’ve decided that if we can’t fix the climate, we might as well just resurrect the animals that lived in a better one.

Dish of the Day 🥘

Ifokore (Water Yam Porridge)

I love a good yam porridge. We had a chance to eat some during our recent trip to Lagos. This dish is tasty! Nobody does spicy like the Yoruba people, and I was not complaining.

My meal came prepared with the smooth blend of water yams, fish, beef, and a slew of spices.

I washed it all down with a big bottle of Guinness.

Did You Know? 🤔 The Ambede proverb about not dancing with eggs actually ties perfectly into that South African AI policy blunder. If you’re carrying something as fragile as a national legal framework, maybe don't try to "dance" with unverified AI tools before you've checked the floor.
