Africa’s $2.5 Trillion Power Move
For years, the conversation has been about foreign aid. In 2026, the talk is shifting to "financial sovereignty." African leaders just pulled the curtain back on the Africa Infrastructure Financing Facility (AIFF).
The Strategy: Instead of waiting for a "yes" from Washington or Beijing, the goal is to tap into the continent’s own $2.5 trillion domestic capital pool—pension funds and local institutional investors.
The goal is to build cross-border roads, rails, and power grids we actually need, on our own terms. It’s a massive move to stop asking for permission and start building the future.
African Proverb of the Day

Business: Mining MoUs and Water Security
We’re looking at two very different but equally vital "liquidity" stories this week.
1. DRC Mining Gets a Promotion: In a major win for the critical minerals race, the Fonds de Promotion de l’Industrie (FPI) and the Industrial Development Corporation (IDC) just signed a historic MoU during DRC Mining Week.
They are teaming up to explore deep investment opportunities in the DRC’s mineral wealth. The mining week event could eventually help African nations have more leverage over the minerals in their soil. But good leadership and policy will be crucial if this can really turn things around.
2. Coca-Cola’s $1.9 Million Water Play: In Tanzania, the Coca-Cola system is dropping $1.9 million into a new project to strengthen water security. It sounds like CSR, but it’s actually pure pragmatism.
You can't run a bottling plant if the local water table is dry. By focusing on watershed protection, they are proving that environmental stability is now a "must-have" for big industry. Water security is becoming a massive crisis in certain areas on the continent (Ethiopia/Egypt), and remember, men may fight over a bottle of booze, but nations go to war over water.

Make Coal Great Again!
With fuel prices swinging wildly, the African Energy Chamber is floating a controversial but practical idea: using coal to provide fiscal relief for SMEs.
The "Chop": While "Green Transitions" dominate the headlines, the Chamber argues that many small businesses just need to survive today. They are looking at how local resources can act as a buffer for the small shops that keep the economy running. It’s a tough conversation, but one the market is definitely having.
Many mom and pop shops need to survive, and if that means burning coal or managing to install solar panels, the main criterion for them is cost and affordability. And trust us, they will always go to the affordable and easy option.
TECH

Meet Okello, the Robot Guide
Uganda just launched Okello, Africa’s first AI-powered robot tour guide.
The Vibe: Stationed at major heritage sites, Okello isn't just a gimmick. He represents a push for "Smart Tourism" in East Africa. It’s a clever blend of ancient history and 2026 tech, giving visitors a high-tech way to explore the Pearl of Africa.
The other cool thing is that Okello was developed entirely by a group of Ugandan engineers and innovators. It was designed to interact with tourists from around the world and can currently support English, French, and five Ugandan languages. It can automatically detect languages and switch back and forth naturally in real time.
But man, could they have at least made the robot black? Just sayin’. ":)

WTO at a Crossroads: Trade leaders are meeting in Cameroon this week. The EU is calling for a "deep reform" of the WTO to handle rising global tensions.
The H-1B Shift: The U.S. is weighing higher minimum wages for H-1B visa holders. This could drastically change the math for African tech pros looking to head stateside.
Tanzania’s $13B Portfolio: Tanzania just unveiled a massive energy investment portfolio. They are looking for partners to help wire up the rest of the country.
Dish of the Day 🥘

Muchomo
While we were in Uganda interacting with Okello the robot, we got hungry. We asked Okello what we should eat, and he quickly told us to try Muchomo. Done deal. We found a vendor that was selling these lovely beef skewers cooking over open coals. It was tender, smoky, and I paired mine with roasted plantain - Winning!
