Virtual Lagos - a $10 million idea

Lagos Life Game

We love this story. A young Nigerian developer, Shalom Rayhamen, unveiled her new creation - Lagos Life, a video game that allows users to explore a digital Lagos. Peeps can participate in everyday activities, such as going to work, entering danfor, getting street food, and anything else that you might actually do in real life.

Since it launched on Oct 1, the game went viral and attracted more tha 4 million users, with 200k peak users concurrently.

The best part is that her company - Vatar - has raised $500,000 and is valued at around 10ms. The investors include Flutterwave CEO Olugbenga “GB” Agboola

The Chop take: It’s cool to see a young woman developer get so much love and also how Lagos culture is featured front and center. Bravo.

There is a lot of money out there for hungry, innovative African companies, and a recent competition: From 700+ applications, six winners were picked on Oct 6 across fintech for inclusion and sustainable agriculture.

Early money going to real problems — ag payments, rent credit scores, WhatsApp storefronts. Love to see it.

Plot twist: the naira gained 5% while African currencies slid 1.2% — Ghanamma / UNCTAD UNCTAD's 2026 report says Africa was the only developing region whose currencies weakened overall this year (-1.2% against the dollar) — but the naira went the other way, from about N1,400 in January to N1,330 in early October. Oil earnings and CBN liquidity helped cushion it. We'll see how long the momentum holds.

Mastercard says Africa's cyberattacks are up 421% — TechMoran Not the fun headline, but an important one. Mastercard's new whitepaper says Africa saw a 421% jump in cyberattacks between 2016 and 2025, with 69k events recorded in 2025 alone. As digital payments head toward $1.5T by 2030, they're flagging a massive cybersecurity jobs gap. Growth is great — defense has to catch up.

World Bank targets $5.79B in private cash for Nigeria's ag & MSMEs — AgriFocus Africa Big numbers here. The World Bank Group wants to mobilize $5.79B for Nigeria, with its AGROW project aiming to reach 1 million smallholder farmers — better seeds, fertilizer systems, digital platforms, market access. If it lands, that's jobs and food security in one move.

🥪 Quick Bites: Winner, Squeeze, Wildcard [AI Summary]

  • 🏆 The Winner: West African Gold & Cocoa Exporters. While general currency volatility persists, sustained global commodity receipts are helping regional treasuries rebuild their external reserves.

  • 🍋 The Squeeze: South African Industrial Logistics. Persistent electricity and freight rail constraints continue to cap economic growth at roughly 2%, lagging behind regional peers like Nigeria.

  • 🃏 The Wildcard: Cross-Border KYC Clearing. With Dangote's extended timeline designed to pull in investors across East and Southern Africa, regional bourses are racing to test interoperable clearing channels that allow seamless share purchasing without currency conversion headaches.

🌍 What Else Is Cooking?

  • Materials engineers in Zurich demonstrated a lightweight bio-resin derived from agricultural husks capable of withstanding the heat loads of electric vehicle battery enclosures, offering an alternative to mined aluminum casings.

  • Satellite cartographers in Chile deployed ultra-high-resolution multispectral imagery to map hidden subterranean aquifer leakages across the Atacama Desert, uncovering prehistoric freshwater reserves.

Answer: B) 2 weeks

Dangote Petroleum Refinery pushed back its offer closing date from October 13 to October 27, 2026. The additional two-week window gives institutional clearinghouses and mobile fintech platforms more time to onboard millions of retail buyers across multiple African jurisdictions.
